HOW EDEN VILLAGE LOUISVILLE BEGAN/CAME TO BE

Who we are and where we are going.

Jacob’s Ladder Outreach was founded by volunteers with years of boots on the ground experience. We chose the name Jacob’s Ladder to honor Pastor Jacob Boger, who not only served unhoused individuals, but began to implement his vision of providing a space for them to uplift themselves.

Our outreach is made of people from all walks of life but share the common goal to love people experiencing homelessness and support them through their journey. Volunteers address the immediate need of our houseless community members. In addition to providing emergency support to our community members, Jacob’s Ladder Outreach is working to secure permanent supportive housing for individuals ready to take the next step.

Homelessness is traumatic and forces individuals to live in constant survival mode. Although the experience of each individual varies, common experiences include inadequate rest, lack of safety and security, harsh weather conditions, carrying all possessions, vulnerability to crime, searching for food, and fragile mental and physical health. A home is a basic necessity, essential to a human’s well-being and only once this need is met is it possible to address other needs.

The Jacob’s Ladder team’s vision of developing a community with safe shelter for all got traction when we connected with Eden Village of Springfield to guide us in our journey. Eden Village of Louisville will build a safe community for chronically houseless and disabled individuals. This village will include a space to encourage community and combat loneliness. Residents will have access to physical and mental health case management, and other community resources. Jacob’s Ladder, with the help of the Louisville community, is determined to make our city a city where no one sleeps outside.

THE EDEN VILLAGE STORY

The proven concept spreading successfully throughout the USA.

In Springfield, MO, the birthplace of the first Eden Village community for the chronically homeless, is now up to 3 Eden Villages that permanently house formerly homeless community members as well as has built the Revive 66 Campground, offering a temporary solution to give our homeless friends a safe and secure place to sleep at night.

These communities are comprised of tiny homes built for single occupants, with a living room, kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, and front porch. There is a community center with additional facilities, a support staff, volunteers, and a community garden to help with clean eating and community self-sustainability. All of this within a gated community where visitors are required to check in with staff. Keeping our community safe and our support system intact.
